Introducing Ps. Scott Jones
As advised at the update forums on 13 and 20 November, The Pastoral Search Team (PST) were actively considering one specific candidate for our new Senior Pastor. On 13 November, the PST formally recommended Ps. Scott Jones, of Devonport, Tasmania to the Board of Elders. Ps. Scott and his wife Dale visited MBC last weekend, spending a lot of time speaking to Deacons, Elders and ministry leaders.
On 8 December, the Board of Elders met to decide if we believed Ps. Scott was “God’s man” to be our new Senior Pastor after Ps. Jock retires. As a result, the Elders unanimously supported the recommendation of the PST and now wish to commend Ps. Scott to the Mackay Baptist Church membership for approval. This has been booked for a Special General Meeting at 11:00am on January 15, 2017.
The Board of Elders are solid in their conviction that Ps. Scott is the person that God would have to lead and pastor MBC for the next five years. We will share some of the reasons for this in the coming week, however – one clear area is Ps. Scott’s giftedness to nurture and encourage ministry leaders and to lead and equip a church which struggling with the challenges of growth and communication. This which was one major observation of the church review that was undertaken in May this year. Also – though the timing seems swift, we have seen God open up many doors to make this happen, even in the last few weeks.
What Happens Next?
In the 5 weeks between today and January 15, the Elders recognise that this can be a busy time as well as a time when some of our family will be away on holidays. Still, we believe we have a solid plan to provide you with information about Scott and Dale, including recorded sermons and other materials, which should help people in the decision-making process.
Also, a large number of you have already met Ps. Scott in the week just passed. Communication packs will be produced and provided to all Church Members by Sunday 18 December. Additional packs will be provided for any individuals or families that would also like to review this information.
Introducing Ps. Scott and Dale Jones:
Ps. Scott Jones was born in Darwin and moved to Brisbane as a child where he went to Holland Park High School. He married his wife, Dale in 1991 who together have 4 children, Kynan (22), Rennick (21), Tiahna (19) and Zanthe (15). Dale is a highly-qualified physiotherapist as well as being a gifted musician and worship leader.
After completing studies, Ps. Scott commenced pastoral ministry as a youth pastor at Clontarf Beach Baptist Church in 1998. He then pastored Katherine Baptist Church in the Northern Territory from 2003 to 2008. In 2009, the family moved to Devonport, Tasmania where Scott has been Senior Pastor of Devonport Baptist Church. Ps. Scott has felt the call away from this role and has been seeking new opportunities.
Ps. Scott has completed an Advanced Diploma of Ministry, a Grad. Diploma of Ministry and a Certificate of Relationship Counselling. He is also currently studying a Graduate Diploma of Counselling and Psychotherapy (Spiritual).
Ps. Scott is a gifted preacher and leader, who believes in the inerrancy of the Word of God and that it should be practically and loving applied in our daily lives. He is gifted in the development and training of new leaders, through empowerment, encouragement and equipping. Ps. Scott is warm, friendly and relatable. Whilst recognizing and teaching that being a disciple of Jesus comes with a cost, we are loved by our Saviour who will never leave us or forsake us.
Here is part of Ps. Scott’s testimony, in his own words:
“In being a follower of Jesus I am constantly reminded of God’s grace and patience. Jesus is my best friend, my brother and my Lord and I count it a privilege to be able to exercise and share my faith with all who God allows me to. Following Jesus can be painful, costly and incredibly rewarding and enriching!”
"...I believe that I am called to follow Christ first and foremost, whilst also recognizing that God leads His people where they can be used for His purpose and the growth of His kingdom on earth."
“I am a practical person at heart and so I tend to minister in ways that relate to people or individuals in practical ways. My teaching is always biblically based with practical understanding and application. I’m fairly relaxed and laid back in life so enjoy walking with people on their faith journey, working beside others and enjoy expressing my faith in everyday experiences. I value trust and so empowering others to succeed in faith/ministry is important to me, while always being available to support and assist as needed.
Ps. Scott and Dale enjoy family activities like camping and four-wheel driving. Scott relaxes with exercise as well as building things and spending time in the shed. The family are also looking forward to warmer weather.
